Hey guys! Just wanted to give you another quick update on the status of my blog.
I bought a new design template! Yay! It should be uploaded within a few days!
New Content will officially resume on September 16th which is the official blog launch date. Essentially a new design and new content on our new domain!
A Pretty Thought will be closing, Monday September 8th! This means all of my lovely followers will be transferred to the new website and no longer able to access a pretty thought. So be sure to change all of your bookmarks!
For more updates be sure to follow me on twitter and Instagram!
I know I’ve been MIA, but honestly it’s been so tough with trying to produce fresh content and build my new blog. I have lots of amazing things in store for you after the blog launch( see full details on that here), so I’m really excited to show you all the things I’ve been working on! There will be a few great changes but here is what you can expect from me in the meantime
Weekly updates: I will be posting an update, such as what your reading right now on the blog each week until the blog launch. That way you all get stay in the know
Social Media: You may have noticed but I changed all my social media usernames to the new blog name! I have been trying to be as interactive as possible on both twitter and Instagram, so during this transition period that will be the best way to reach me!
So that’s all for this update, I will check in again next week! Hope you all have a great labor day weekend!
I’m a “Type A” kind of girl which means I like order and everything slightly perfect so its no surprise that I approach my blog the same way. I’m all about the visuals, so I constantly asking myself how does this look, will my concept resonate with others who are reading it, does this represent me and my blog well? My biggest dilemma is always trying to find the perfect theme. I see something that is simple and easy to read but then I think it looks too boring, then I see something colorful and pretty but I don’t think it looks professional. You see my problem? My mini theme obsession has cost me hours of research on blog design and overtime I’ve learned the basics but today I wanted to offer you all a different perspective and some added tips that sometimes get left out.
Leave your comment section at the top: This is a slight detail that most people overlook but its a big deal to me. Often times it takes me days to be able to read through my Bloglovin feed and by the time I get to a really great post so have a million other readers; which means lots of comments. If your blog is prone to a ton of comments I would suggest making your comment section at the top( such as cupcakes and cashmere) so that your readers don’t have to scroll through 60 comments to interact with you. If I see 100 comments in the queue and nowhere to leave mine chances are I will just click like and move on.
Words before outfit: There are times when I read an OOTD and simply don’t like someone’s outfit (lezzzz be honest). If I see 10 photos of your outfit and have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the post before I get any text, I’m already uninterested. Even if there is not a lot to say; it’s always nice to read the setting, context and see a little personality in each post before you see a photo. Often times I may not like the outfit but I will stick around long enough to read the text because I like the story behind the photo.( Blogger Kayture and Love cats in does this really well)
Over designing: Now I know we’ve all probably heard the warnings about only using white backgrounds and easy to read fonts (which by the way does make for an easier read), but it’s really hard to accomplish that without looking boring. Your blog design should instantly show some sense of your personality and what your blog is about. Weather its white and black (like Harper and Harley) which clearly indicates a more modern and classic style, or you like lots of color (like a beautiful mess, which shows their fun and spunky personalities. The key is finding a balance. Your blog should be personable, memorable but not loud and chaotic. If you love red, then try adding it in subtle areas of your blog, don’t overdue it by making all the text red (I’ve seen it before!). If you love prints, instead of using it as a background, try using it as part of your header.
A few other tips to keep in mind
White Background: Ovbi
Font that is easy to read
Delete the Captcha: Try and find another way to rid your spam as often times captcha is a hassle for your readers
Make your social media visible
Make your blog mobile friendly
No popups: We should read your blog first before we see an ad!
Make your photos pinnable
By all means this post is simply just my opinion, but I have learned from reading blogs and redesigning my own blog (which is coming in a few weeks) the power of design editing and taking a step back so that my content is the main focus. I hope these tips help you as much as they have helped me!
Ps: I’ve been noticing I write a lot of these blogging tip posts; potential series coming soon!? What do ya think!?
Some links I loved this week, plus I will be adding quotes to this series also!
Dethroning Vogue Magazine: I thought this was interesting. I never have been a fan of vogue. I think it’s a magazine filled with paid advertisements and personally I can never relate to it. But this post caught my attention.
Blogging Tips: Some great reads on how to start monetizing your blog!
Because Im Addicted: I love interior design. I can spend hours looking at apartment decorations on pinterest. With this particular house I like the color palate. The coloring and the design of the whole apartment very mature unisex( meaning not overly girlie), which is perfect for me and my boyfriend!
Finding your personal style: I have a BS in Apparel Merchandising so most of these tips I learned in college. But I thought it would be nice to share with you all!
Wall décor: I’ve been trying to put together my inspirational wall, and I have been drawing blanks on what or how to actually decorate it. I love some of these wall decors and I like that some of these frames are easy to find cheap at ikea or target! Etsy may even have pre-matted photos! Ahhh I’m excited!
I don’t even know how to start this post except with…it’s been a longggggg week, And it’s only Wednesday. I know I have been running way behind on posting, so sorry! I just got back from vacation and work is hectic…scratch that..Life is hectic. But I do have lots of blogging stuff to catch up on which means fun new things coming your way! I love researching blogs, learning new ideas and finding ways to stay inspired as well as inspire you all. Check back with me on the weekend! Until then you can stay up to date with me on Twitter!
Hey everybody! Just wanted to announce that I am currently on vacation. I decided to take a blogging break and just enjoy my little vacay so posts will be available next Monday! . I also have received all of your lovely comments and will be replying as soon as I get back home!
Most people are spending their Fourth of July at a BBQ, Beach, or drunk on the street somewhere screaming God bless America. I however decided to take a personal day. I woke up this morning and drove 20 minutes to the nearest Sprinkles cupcakes so that I could get my daily fix of red velvet cupcakes. I got three; one for each day of the weekend. Yes, I’m addicted. Normally the freeway is packed with cars and the plaza is filled with people but today; since everyone is eating hotdogs at the beach, the plaza was completely empty and I had the whole freeway to myself. I dropped my little rascal Kennedy back at the house and grabbed my laptop to get some blogging done. Currently sitting in Starbucks writing this as we speak. I figured I would get more work done If I wasn’t sitting in front of the TV. I’m drinking a Black Lemonade Ice tea thingy and listening to some Shakira. Her Latin beats make me feel like I’m on vacation.
Welp back to writing some more content! Gotta get prepared for next week. Enjoy the Holiday! Happy Independence day!
Hey everybody; I have a lot of new fun things for my blog and I wanted to share them with you!
1. Switching from WordPress.com to self hosting on WordPress.org : I would like to have more control of my blog, So sometime in the coming months you will see a lot of cool new changes!
2. Potential new name: I’m considering changing my blog name. I feel like I’ve outgrown my currently blogging title. I’m still contemplating it but as soon as I have a name you will be the first to know! I’ve narrowed it down to 3!! So excited!
3. OOTD: I’m trying to switch from using other photos to actually using my own outfit of the day. Unfortunately I don’t have a photographer like many of these other bloggers and I usually don’t have the time to do a full photoshoot. I’m working out the kinks but for now OOTD Posts will be on hold: unless I absolutely love something and have to write about it. You can still see my Polvore sets at Polvore or instagram!
4. Daily Posts: I will be doing a post from the daily post prompt here at WordPress. I really want to try free-writing and just bettering myself as a blogger. I also want to give you all a different way to get to know me outside of my daily makeup and fashion posts.
At the end of the day blogging is all about experimenting with things and figuring out what suits you best! As I keep adding things I’m learning what you all like most and some areas that I may need to stray away from. If any of you have tips on anything please let me know!
I signed up for the WordPress Blogging U Challenge; where we are challenged to blog every day and WordPress give us different blog prompts. I thought this would be extremely fun and interesting; a new perspective and maybe a chance for my followers to get to know me a little bit more!
Today’s writing Challenge was: To get started, let’s loosen up. Let’s unlock the mind. Today, take twenty minutes to free write. And don’t think about what you’ll write. Just write.
Lately what’s been on my mind is changing my blog name. I feel like I’ve outgrown it a little bit. My blog was meant to be sort of a niche blog. All about how to dress for tall women or things that I felt I struggled with such as beauty or finding the right pair of shoes. I found that it would be interesting to write about my blogging struggles and hopefully someone could learn tips from them. Then as I started to do more blogging research I realized I needed to hone it in a little bit more. Felt like my thoughts and ideas were too scattered and my blog didn’t have a clear focus. A pretty thought fitted at the time; I was new to the blogging world; I wanted something light and easy but now I take blogging a little bit more seriously. I want to reach a more diverse crowd and now I’m started to grow as a person and I want a blog title that will grow with me. I battle between something catchy like fashion____ or Style this; but then that’s so generic. I love blog names Like “because I’m addicted” or “ Honestly WTF” because those are actually sayings I say myself, making the blog more fun to read. I also want to change my blog name from .org to a .com; I think it will be better for SEO. Even my own mother can’t remember the .org and there is actually my same blog name but .com so it’s quite confusing. I’m also scared of changing my name. I work so hard for the recognition that I have that I don’t want to lose that.
Even though I’m torn I have made the decision to change my blog name; to something that is both catchy and can continue to grow with me over time. I hope my followers stay and that it works out for me! Stay tuned for the name coming soon!
My obsession with having long hair means I’ve tried just about every extension possible. My Hair has been chemically relaxed for almost 10years now. It’s extremely thick, dark brown( basically off black; color 1b) and it’s a little past my shoulders. Over the years I’ve experimented with several different hair extensions and decided to share a few tips and hair lango I have learned along the way. I’m African American so some of things will pertain to just my hair texture but most of these tips will be universal.
Yaki vs Silky
Virgin Hair vs Yaki/Silky: Any hair that is Yaki texture means its been processed to resemble African American textured hair. Virgin means that the hair has not been chemically treated at all; no color change and no texture change. This is great for those who want to dye their extensions; But beware of hair that says Virgin Malaysian Remy Hair, Or Virgin Peruvian Hair Yaki Textured. Both the words remy and yaki mean that the hair has been processed; in which case it is no longer virgin!
Teasing our hair: some people tease their hair to get it to look fuller and so that their clip in extensions can stay in place. But after a fresh perm this is a big No, NO. You need to wait until your hair has some new growth before you start clipping in your extensions; or if you’re really anxious wash your hair and blow dry it out so that the hair is a little thicker.
Sleeping in extensions: Do not sleep in your clip ins at all. It will pull on your hair. Also don’t sleep in bobby pins or duck clips. Anything metal at all will only irritate your scalp and pull at your hair. You don’t want to look like Kim Kardashian with a whole bunch of bald spots on your head!
Buying the right amount of clip ins: The longer your extensions the more hair you need. My hair is super thick /long and although I always buy clip ins that are 20inchs or longer I still need 2 ½ -3 packs of clip ins in order to have a full look.
