One of my favorite things about blogging is the sense that you can blog about anything and everything and the best part is that its 100% you. I love it when I read a blog and you can literally hear the person talking (my new fav is adorned in armor! great writing!) It’s as if you’re in the moment with them. Each site has its own style, but at the end of the day a blog has to have personality! I’ve only been blogging for a year but I’ve already learned a few great tips! So here ya go!
1. WTF: Some blogs have sooooooo many ads. It feels like you’re looking at city lights with all the different advertisements popping out at you. I get that promotion is how you make the money but when both your side bars are cluttered your blog just seems like a website or a magazine.
Tip: Keep it to a minimum of 3 and then rotate them out on a monthly basis for different companies.
2. Yo Stacey: One of the first things I look at is too see if the blogger responds to those who actually comment. Nowadays with social media it’s so much easier to just double click a photo than it is to write a comment (I even find myself double clicking photos on Facebook; and then realize all it does is make the photo bigger whoopsss).
Tip: If someone takes the time to write a thoughtful comment then show them you care! The best thing about blogging is the interaction!
3. I wanna know: If I wanted to just look at pictures I would go on instagram. Obviously not every post warrants a full dialogue but it’s nice to know what inspired the post! If anything, it gives the reader a reason to stay on your blog and it gives them a chance to get to know you more!
Tip: I also love a blog that isn’t grammatically perfect. It’s nice to see a reader write ” blah” in the middle of a sentence or maybe a little ramble without commas and periods. Makes it more fun!
There are still the basics like photos of yourself, or an about me section but it’s always good to make sure that your content is also personal. Every blogger has their own flare but these are just a few things that I do to try to stand out. What suggestions do you have!?
Disclaimer: These are solely my opinions and what works for me.

Ahh I couldn’t agree more. Especially about the interactions and the narratives and descriptives. When I put up an outfit post,I ramble so much, and then I have to edit and control that ramble so as not not scare my readers!

Agree on all of them! Especially comments. I’ve left lovely comments on some smaller blogs and just wanted to see if the author will actually answer my questions…honestly 1 out of 9 answer. It takes 2 minutes….
Anyways, well done and congrats on Links a la Mode feature! x

Ah totally agree! Especially on comments. I’ve left so many comments when I really wanted to know about a specific item or the shade of the lipstick, but almost never get an answer back…what’s the point then?
Thanks xx great post

I totally agree, I try to reply to everyone though some comments are simple and don’t really need an answer. I like to have a look at their blog to if they leave a link. Interaction is key I think

Yep, yep, its very important to me that bloggers reply to the comments where its plain to see that effort and thought were put into it! For me engagement and interaction is kinda the major point of blogging. I also know what you mean about the blogs that have too many ads, its like entering a room with clothes spilled all over the floor, its overwhelming and you dont know where to look!

Loved that you talked about when bloggers respond! If I see someone comment on my post, I always respond. If I read it then I respond, when other bloggers don’t I always find it strange, especially when they aren’t very big bloggers. I would understand why bigger bloggers don’t respond to comments since there are so many and they are probably very busy, but if you have the time to respond then do it!

Totally agree! Blogging is built around community. I think it’s one big thing that sets us apart from magazines and websites. We gotta keep talking to eachother and building eachother up. Plus I’m always way more encouraged to leave a comment when I see that the author has written back!
Thanks for reading!

One year, really? You write like someone who has been blogging for years. I really like this post – short, simple, straight-forward and a bit sassy into the mix as well.
Linked from IFB but I am glad I visited.
